Residents Get Close Look at Roundabout Plans in Farmington Hills

Road Commission for Oakland County staff members take feedback and answer questions during a Wednesday open house held at Warner Upper Elementary.

Area residents got their first look Wednesday at detailed plans for a construction project that will dramatically change the 14 Mile/Orchard Lake/Northwestern Hwy. intersection in Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield.  The installation of a turnabout and related road improvements will take more than eight months, with the project staged in four phases during the 2014 construction season. Different sections of 14 Mile Road will be completely closed for all but the final phase, and plans call for two-way traffic to be open at all times on other roads, for the duration.  Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) design engineer Jeff O'Brien said those who came to the open house at Warner Upper Elementary School in Farmington Hills wanted …

Roundabouts are a fabulous addition to the area. But frankly I would like to know where the roundabout is on the recently reconstructed intersection of Orchard Lake and 11 Mile Road. That intersection makes no sense for the amount of traffice that DOES NOT flow through there. And while I am complaining, I can't help but wonder how many BILLIONS of gallons of gasoline are wasted in Michigan with …   more ›

Mosque Development Site Plan Tabled by West Bloomfield Planners

Questions remain amid protests and big crowds regarding the former Eagle Elementary School at Middlebelt and 14 Mile roads.

In order to allow more time to develop a plan that would allow the Islamic Cultural Association (ICA) of Franklin to build a mosque in West Bloomfield, the Planning Commission tabled the matter Tuesday. A crowd packed into Town Hall on Tuesday night to hear more about the controversial plans at the site of the former Eagle Elementary School at Middlebelt and 14 Mile roads, including the local branch of By Any Means Necessary, a social action group, which protested in support of the ICA outside for at least a half-hour before the meeting started. The issue received attention from news outlets around the country in days since the commission voted to table the issue at its last meeting in August. While some issues have been raised regarding …

Mosque Developers Ask West Bloomfield Township to Table Plans

At a Zoning Board of Appeals site visit Tuesday, officials tabled two requests from the Islamic Cultural Center.

Developers of a mosque at the corner of 14 Mile and Middlebelt Roads in West Bloomfield Township have requested that plans slated for review at the Planning Commission's Oct. 23 meeting be tabled.  That request, which Islamic Cultural Association (ICA) representatives said was made to address concerns, led the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to table requests for a determination on height limitations for some of the building's architectural features and for an exemption from a requirement to build a masonry wall on the west property line. During a Tuesday site visit, residents during public comment raised a number of issues, from whether it is appropriate to have a 3-4 story building on the property, to concerns about traffic.  Long-time …

Mosque Developers' Requests Tabled by West Bloomfield Zoning Board

Officials plan a visit to the former Eagle Elementary School site to review requests for exceptions to the zoning ordinance for a minaret and spire.

The West Bloomfield Township Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday night scheduled a site visit to better understand concerns of residents surrounding the former Eagle Elementary School site. Last year, Farmington Public Schools sold the building to the Islamic Cultural Association (ICA), which has requested zoning ordinance variances that representatives see as necessary in order to build a mosque/community center at the site. The board unanimously tabled those requests. The board also disregarded two variance requests that were proposed as alternatives to the developers' preferred requests. Instead, the board approved, by a 3-2 vote, new construction of paved areas used for cars, and for the largest of two domes to be built at a height …

Update: Public Hearing for Mosque Developers Rescheduled

Islamic Cultural Center development at former site of Eagle Elementary School now goes before township Zoning Board of Appeals Oct. 4.

A public hearing scheduled regarding the site of the former Eagle Elementary School in West Bloomfield has been moved, to accomodate the Jewish Sukkot holiday. The Township Zoning Board of Appeals will meet on Thursday to discuss a number of variances to the site plan for the Islamic Cultural Association, a local organization which hopes to build a mosque/community center at the site formerly used by Farmington Public Schools. Township attorneys have requested that the ZBA interpret the township zoning ordinance with regard to several issues raised at the Aug. 15 Planning Commission meeting — including the height of the minaret and dome atop the mosque portion of the building, the size of the setback from the street, and the fencing …

Go to http://www.care4eagle.com for some renderings of the building. The minaret is approximately 45 ft. high,. The majority if not all of the other buildings are single story, with the exception of St. Colemans, and the clock tower which I believe does not exceed 2 stories - approx. 20 ft. That makes it more than twice as tall as any othe structure in the area. Also, the tallest structure on the…   more ›

Mosque Developers' Variance Requests Coming to Public Hearing

Islamic Cultural Center development at former site of Eagle Elementary School goes before township Zoning Board of Appeals Oct. 2.

Plans to build the Islamic Cultural Center, a mosque/community center at the site of the former Eagle Elementary School in West Bloomfield, will next come before township government for a public hearing Oct. 2. Township Planner Sara Roediger said Monday that homeowners near the school at 14 Mile and Middlebelt roads have been notified of the meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to grant a number of variances to the site plan, after the Planning Commission tabled the plan at its Aug. 15 meeting. Township attorneys had requested the ZBA to interpret the township zoning ordinance with regard to several issues raised at the Aug. 15 meeting — including the height of the minaret and dome atop the mosque portion of the building, the size …

Romney Family Canvasses in West Bloomfield

Ronna Romney and Ronna Romney McDaniel, both of Northville, spoke of jobs and education Friday before heading to a picnic at Drake Sports Park.

If Mitt Romney is to win Michigan's 16 crucial electoral votes in November's general election, his campaign will need to reach out to an area in Oakland County thought to be a stronghold of the Democratic Party. At least, that's what those close to him — Ronna Romney, a former GOP senate candidate and former sister-in-law of the Republican Presidential candidate, and Ronna Romney McDaniel, his niece who is spearheading his campaign in Michigan — said Friday. Canvassing in West Bloomfield's Thornberry Apartments prior to a "Women for Mitt" family picnic at the Drake Sports Park with Romney McDaniel's young daughter Abigail, the Romneys said that while they believe Michigan is certainly in play, it would take a grassroots effort to make it …

Were Questions Inappropriate for Developers Building Mosque at Eagle Elementary?

Wetland Review Board schedules site visit, Planning Commission hears concerns from community and faces charges of Islamophobia from activist organizer.

Because of issues surrounding the construction of a mosque and community center on the former Eagle Elementary School site at 14 Mile and Middlebelt in West Bloomfield, an Islamic activist organizer has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to monitor the situation. Council on American-Islamic Relations of Michigan (CAIR-MI) executive director Dawud Walid cited an inappropriateness in concerns raised by commissioner Jim Manna during a planning commission hearing Tuesday. Walid compared the situation to that in Pittsfield Township last year, in which CAIR-MI alleged discrimination by that township's government. Nabil Suliman, a member of the ICA, provided information and fielded questions about the project Tuesday. He explained that the …

What does them having a mosque have anything to do with you. If you don't like it, don't go. Religion is tearing everyone apart, you're supposed to be so loving and moral. It is completely absurd, and you are being extremely irrational and intolerant. I myself am an atheist, and I have no problem with anyone building any mosque, temple, or church etc, ironic huh?   more ›
