Warner Upper Elementary musicians make their own kind of music.

Name: Viking Music Club School: Warner Upper Elementary Accomplishment: The Viking Music Club performed a song members wrote during their school's Field Day on June 13. Students persevered despite strong winds and a little trouble with a bass speaker. Key to Awesomeness: This group of young musicians piloted a program with Axis Music, which is located on Northwestern Highway in Southfield. The five-week course taught them the blues form of music and how to do improvisation, Axis representative Patrick Fitzgibbon said. Parent coordinator Erika Golden said her son, Nathan, who is part of the group, will be going to Dunckel Middle School this fall, so she hopes to continue the program there—and even spread it to Power Upper Elementary and …

Margaret Amshay is one of four Farmington students selected to compete in the National Reflections Competition.

Name: Margaret Amshay, fifth grade School: Warner Upper Elementary School Accomplishment: Margaret has entered the Michigan Parent Teacher Student Association (MPTSA) Reflections competition before, but her work has never gone past school recognition. She decided to focus her project this year on a community service program she started called One Can a Week. This year's Reflections theme was "Together we can..." For her entry, "Together We Can Stop Hunger," Margaret filmed interviews with the food bank coordinator at the Farmington Hills Neighborhood House as well as program participants. Haakam Aujla, who shot a video about pollution, is one of four Farmington students selected to compete in a national competition.

Name: Haakam Aujla Grade: Second School: Highmeadow Common Campus Accomplishment: Haakam entered a video in the Michigan Parent Teacher Student Association Reflections competition. This year's theme was "Together we can..." Haakam's video was titled "Together We Can Protect Our Environment by Recycling More." Haakam got the idea for his video after watching a documentary online about pollution around the world. His submission was one of four from the Farmington School District chosen for the national competition. Key to awesomeness: This is Haakam's third year of entering the Reflections contest through his school. Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

East Middle School student Anu Emmandi is a whiz at writing essays.

Name: Anu Emmandi Age: 14 School: East Middle School Accomplishment: Anu took first place in the America and Me Essay Contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. She is now competing at the state level. Her essay for the National Council of Teachers of English Promising Younger Writers Program is also advancing to the state level. Key to awesomeness: Anu loves to write, and she credits her English teacher Ms. Leyman with encouraging her to enter the essay contests. "I like to write about what I want to write about," she said. "I like writing poetry and descriptive writing." Not surprisingly, Anu is also an "A" student.

Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

Eight-year-old Katrina Skiotys is a talented and committed horseback rider.

Name: Katrina Skiotys, 8 School: Wood Creek Elementary Accomplishment: Katrina excels at horseback riding, jumping and competing. Key to Awesomeness: Katrina has earned many honors competing in schooling and Michigan Hunter Jumper Association shows. Most of the people she competes against are much older. She will compete this summer for a chance to qualify for national competition in Kentucky. Katrina is very determined, and she will always ask her trainer to put the jumps up higher. She can canter a course and has jumped up to 2 feet, 6 inches. This is quite an accomplishment for someone her age. Katrina currently rides at Mary-Go-Round in South Lyon. On average, she rides up to three times a week.

Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

Matthew Hamill is growing out his hair to benefit kids who have lost theirs.

Name: Matthew Hamill, 10 School: Warner Upper Elementary School Key to Awesomeness: Matthew is participating in a program that helps children who have lost their hair due to radiation. Matthew is growing his hair a minimum of 12 inches to donate to Wigs for Kids. He is planning to donate at least twice before his 13th birthday. As of now, he is halfway there, having completed his first donation. Growing one's hair may not seem like a big accomplishment, but it is challenging being a boy and having 12-inch-long hair.

Erin Sawyer excels in the Farmington Public Schools Book Parade program.

Name: Erin Sawyer, 9 School: Hillside Elementary School Accomplishment: Reading and successfully conferencing (meeting with a volunteer to discuss the books in depth) on all 11 Book Parade books in two weeks. Key to Awesomeness: The Book Parade kickoff was Thursday, Jan. 13, for all Farmington Public Schools fourth-graders, and the program will run through Feb. 10. Erin set an academic goal for herself: to read and successfully conference on all 11 books in two weeks. This was an aggressive goal, given the volume of books, the testing and acquiring the books. This was about challenging herself, and it meant reading during every spare minute and coordinating getting the books in a quick manner, since she could check out only one book at a …
