Retired in 2003, he has been active in a number of community organizations since then including The American Cancer Society avnd ACS Cancer Action Netowrk, JARC, various genealogy organizations and his fraternity alumni association. A "political junkie" since 1960 when as a college student he met then Senator John F. Kennedy, Dick has been politically active since, with good friends on "both sides of the aisle". He considers himself politically progressive but recognizes that politics is the "art of the possible". In 2009, he and Caryn were given the Farmington Hills Adult Volunteer of the Year Award.
