Ken, thank you for your comments at the BH Board meeting last night (and waiting around so long to make them!). I was watching from the comfort of my den (since the voters decided that's where I ought to be...lol.) Anyway, your concern about local school districts surviving is an important one, and sometimes I fear BH and Bham are not as focused on this issue as they should be. Keep up your drum beat on this; I appreciate all your blogs and the time you give to writing them.

Two things: #1. When in doubt (about doing something or saying something) remember it never hurts to be nice to someone. #2. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I'm sure there will be plenty of shout outs to Cheryl Zielinski in the BHS district. Cheryl is always on top of everything, the "go to" person for zillions of requests, which are always accomplished with a smile and in a timely manner. Here's to you, Cheryl, the school district couldn't run without you! Also want to salute Jan McMichael at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, who knows everything, does everything, helps everyone to the nth degree, and does it all smiling with good humor. Likewise, BSLC can't operate without her !

First concert of any kind I remember attending was the Baldwin High School Band concert in the old Baldwin gym in Birmingham in the mid 1940's. It was so hot in the gym that I fainted! (Which is probably why I remember it!). The first professional concert I ever attended was a DSO "school concert" at the Masonic Temple (Detroit) not long after the symphony reorganized some time in the late 1940's conducted by Valter Poole. Please don't tell me how old I am!!

To answer Jenny's question to me from last night, I wasn't talking about anything other than a response to the person who complained about empty buildings, pointing out that they will be needed for student use the next two years. When BHHS opens the district will be able to lease, sell or repurpose those facilities. Of course the 2 elementary schools were closed to save money, as were Traub, Vaughan, Booth and Fox Hills in previous years. Having fought hard to keep Traub School open as my neighborhood elementary school, I was not a happy camper when that decision came down. But our group didn't cost our taxpayers money by filing a law suit. Sometimes unpopular decisions have to be made for the good of the whole community, and while I still think the wrong school was closed, school closings are inevitable when enrollment drops so drastically. Now it may be that in 2 more years we will see a continuation of the small enrollment increase that has occurred this year. If so, we are in a good place to reopen one of the schools used in transition.

There will be no empty, unused buildings in the school district for the next two years while Andover AND the building now used for plant services are remodeled and partially demolished. Hickory Grove becomes BHHS freshmen campus, Pine Lake becomes Model HS. It is preferable to have the heavy equipment, trucks etc in a non residential area. It certainly would do harm to the Farm, which is one of our district treasures and used every day by our kids, neighboring district's kids (whose fees for use bring in revenue) and our community. I'm also fairly sure that the residents who live adjacent to, and across the street from, the Farm would not like either the noise or the loss of property values associated with plant services placed there. When the bond issue was passed and the finances carefully planned out for every aspect of the building and transition costs, up to a million dollars was budgeted for plant services relocation. As Julia said, by approving this choice, the Board just saved about $300,000. Since the new site is in a non residential area our residents gain in both home value issues and peace and quiet. Plus, the building could be sold if desired at any time in the future without disruption to our kids or residents. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

During the time span that Chad was attending the BH schools, many in the community, along with teachers such as Wayne Tilton, Doug Campbell, Nancy Koski and Val Palmieri, were working hard to ensure music opportunities for all our kids would remain and grow in the future. The outstanding music program we enjoy today must continue to be nurtured and supported.

Mendelssohn Reformation Symphony (#5)--loved conducting it with the TCO 20 years ago. And I would also like to encourage everyone to get out and hear the OYO--those young musicians need our support!
