Scott, Galvin, Cowley Win Farmington City Council Seats

First-time candidate Jeff Scott collects the highest number of votes in the local election.

Jeff Scott had no idea what to expect as a first-time city council candidate in Farmington.

He and his wife, Anne, along with other family and friends, just did their best to hit every single home in the city with their message. The work paid off; Scott finished in first place in Tuesday's local election, earning a 4-year seat with 1,691 votes.

Incumbent Bill Galvin took the second 4-year seat with 1,412 votes, and Greg Cowley earned his second, 2-year term, with 1,298 votes.

"When I made that commitment to (former mayor) Tom Buck, if I was going to do it, I was going to go all the way," Scott said. He added that going door-to-door brought him to parts of the city he had never seen, and "that was a really good thing."

Galvin said he feels the new city council is a "great group of people". He said he saw a lot of support for the objectives he wants to attain.

"I think the voters got it right," he said.

While Galvin and Scott both reported knocking on a lot of doors, Cowley said he did not, and also spent no money on his campaign. A co-owner in John Cowley & Sons, a family-run restaurant in downtown Farmington, he described himself as "representing business people in the marketplace."

"I'm happy that we've got a good council," Cowley said. "I think Jeff understands the issues and supports where we're going."
