Destination Imagination Teams Take Top Global Honors

Farmington school board members on Tuesday honored two Destination Imagination (DI) teams for bringing home top honors from a global competition in May.

Both I Love DI, Longacre 3rd grader Alex Jiang and Hillside 4th grader Jonah Mougouè, and Sassy Sausages, North Farmington juniors Emily Delius, Courtney Pierret and Alyssa Robert, senior Sarah Robert, and Mercy junior Haley Gold, won at regional and state competitions to qualify for the trip to Knoxville, TN.

I Love DI took 3rd place in a technical challenge and scored highest among 78 teams in an instant challenge. Sassy Sausages finished in 7th place in their challenge, among 65 teams. DI competitors came from around the U.S. and a dozen foreign countries.

Destination Imagination challenges students to come up with creative solutions using what they've learned in science, technology, math and engineering. The younger team had to design and build 3-10 small cars using at least three different power sources and present a story related to the cars, among other activities.

The high school students, who have been competing together since 3rd grade, were required to develop a piece of kinetic art that explored the power of wind energy and create a performance around it. The Sassy Sausages built a 6-foot tall, wind-powered carousel.

Anyone interested in learning more about the 2013-2014 DI program is invited to a meeting held June 18, 7 p.m., in the Ten Mile Building, 23789 W. 10 Mile Rd., in Farmington. The meeting will also celebrate the winning teams. For more information, write to atfarmptac@gmail.com or visit www.destinationimagination.org.
